Founded through the generosity of Yale alumnus and philanthropist Paul Mellon, the YCBA houses the largest collection of British art outside the United Kingdom. From the luminous landscapes of Turner and Constable to the striking works of contemporary artists like Barbara Hepworth and Yinka Shonibare, the collection spans five centuries and offers a rich lens into British history and creativity.
The building itself is a masterpiece: the final work of architect Louis Kahn, it is renowned for its serene, light-filled galleries and quiet grandeur. As Kahn described, “On a gray day it will look like a moth. On a sunny day, like a butterfly.”
Our guided tour will span all four floors of the museum, including two special exhibitions Painters, Ports, and Profits: Artists and the East India Company, 1750–1850 and Going Modern: British Art, 1900-1960, as well as highlights of the YCBA’s unique history, design, and permanent collection.
